Cervicogenic Headache: Etiology and a Strategic Approach to Management
Cervicogenic headache is one of the most highly debated and challenging areas in headache medicine. Cervicogenic headache is a referred pain from cervical structures innervated by the upper three cervical spinal nerves. Possible sources of cervicogenic headache are the various joints, nerves, vessels, and soft tissues in the upper posterior neck. However, it is sometimes difficult to differentiate clinically between cervicogenic headache, migraine, and tension-type headache. Response to diagnostic blockade of the nerve supply of these cervical structures, or intra– articular injection of local anesthetic into the implicated joint is now considered the major criterion in the diagnosis of cervicogenic headache. This symposium will discuss the etiology and possible sources of cervicogenic headache, with emphasis on the importance of a multidisciplinary management approach. We will also review recent advances in interventional management techniques, including radiofrequency and neuromodulation.
