The Truth About Pain Management: The Interface of Pain and Addiction
The fear of addiction is one of the barriers to opioid pain management; the result can be under- or nontreatment of moderate to severe pain. Addiction is a brain disease in which the diagnosis is often made prospectively over time and must be understood by the prescribing healthcare professional doing pain management. To that end, this seminar will give the definitions of addiction, physical dependence, tolerance, pseudotolerance and pseudoaddiction. The seminar will present “Universal Precautions in Pain Medicine” and explain opioid agreements, urine drug testing (UDT) in patients with or without the disease of addiction, and entrance and exit strategies in prescribing schedule II medications. The information presented in this seminar should allow the prescriber to begin a relationship with the patient based on mutual trust and honesty. This relationship should begin before writing the first prescription for a controlled substance.
