Low Back Pain: Does Physical Therapy Work?
Effective physical therapy can be an important part of treatment of acute and chronic low back pain. This session will review evidencebased research regarding outcomes for acute and chronic low back pain. Effective assessment and treatment of low back pain relies on a basic understanding of musculoskeletal systems involved in core lumbar stabilization and targets for a sensitized nervous system (i.e., radiculopathy and myofascial pain). This symposium will review different types of active physical therapy approaches (i.e., McKenzie and neurodynamic treatments) commonly used by physicians and therapists. Specific cases will be reviewed including assessment techniques and therapy progression.
