Breaking Concepts in Diagnosis and Treatment of Complex Regional Pain Syndromes
Functional MRI (fMRI) provides a new window to view brain changes that occur, and that can possibly be reversed, in patients with complex regional pain syndromes (CRPS). Innovative treatments are being used increasingly to treat the central and more peripheral presentations of the syndromes. This symposium provides an in-depth view of the use for fMRI to examine CRPS. Novel treatments such as use of ketamine and cytokine inhibition to treat central components of the syndrome are described in detail. Use of Botulinum toxin to interrupt cholinergic transmission in the sympathetic pathway is explained.
