| (402) Pain, Sleep, and Medicine | |||
| Sleep dysfunction is all too common in chronic pain syndromes and results in increased pain, risk of depression, impaired coping skills, and excessive daytime sedation. These circumstances can create an unknown force that undermines successful pain therapies and leads to treatment failures. A growing body of literature suggests that medications used to treat pain are contributing to nocturnal hypoxia and sleep apneas, including opioid-induced central sleep apnea. This course reviews the interactions between the pathophysiology of pain and sleep. It covers sleep dysfunctions typical in pain patients, diagnostic tools, and the role of the pain practitioner in seeking a comprehensive solution to sleep dysfunction and sleepdisordered breathing. | |||
