CALL FOR SCIENTIFIC ABSTRACTS
GENERAL INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR SUBMISSION
NEW FOR 2009 - Poster Awards
The 2009 Scientific Poster Abstract Committee will select up to 6 scientific poster abstract submitters to present their research during "live" Plenary Research Highlights sessions held each morning during the 2009 Annual Meeting. This honor includes the recognition of "faculty" status at the meeting. As faculty of the annual meeting, the presenters’ airfare, lodging and registration are complementary. As an additional reward, each of these presenters will also receive complementary meeting registration for the 2010 AAPM Annual Meeting in San Antonio, Texas.

Submission deadline top
Abstracts must be submitted by 11:59 pm EST August 1, 2008.
Notification top
Applicants will be notified August30, 2008 regarding acceptance of submissions.
Poster sessions and presentations top
Accepted abstracts will be presented as posters. Posters will be on display Wednesday, January 28 2009, beginning at 5:00 pm, and will remain on display until Friday morning at 10:00 am January 30, 2009. In addition, all posters will be displayed during three scheduled poster sessions:

One author must be designated as the presenter of the poster. The presenter need not be the first author. This presenter is requested to be present during the 3 scheduled poster sessions. All posters must be picked up by 10:30 am Friday, January 30.
Plenary Research Highlight faculty top

Meeting registration top
Presenters must register for at least 2 days of the Annual Meeting. Presenters are responsible for all travel, lodging, and meeting expenses. Presenters are encouraged to register for the meeting and to reserve hotel accommodations as early as possible to ensure that space is available. Conference brochures will be mailed to all accepted poster presenters in early September. Information and on-line registration will also be available on the AAPM web site at www.painmed.org.

All abstracts must be submitted electronically via the on-line abstract submission form.
Submission guidelines top
Step-by-step guidelines are provided for each stage of the application process on the abstract submission web site. Each abstract is automatically assigned an Abstract ID# and password. Abstracts may be viewed and modified at any time between submission and the submission deadline, using the assigned ID# and password.

Publication top
All previously unpublished abstracts that are accepted will be published in the Annual Meeting Program Book and Pain Medicine, the official journal of AAPM.
Abstracts that have been previously published, or that have been accepted for publication, are eligible to be presented as posters at the meeting and will be included in the program book, however the abstracts will not be published in Pain Medicine.
In order to avoid copyright infringement, authors must warrant that the material being submitted is original and does not violate the copyright of any third party.
Policy on commercial support top
Authors must disclose all financial relationships that they may have with commercial interests.
Financial relationships are defined by the ACCME as: those relationships in which the individual benefits by receiving a salary, royalty, intellectual property rights, consulting fee, honoraria, ownership interest (e.g., stocks, stock options or other ownership interest, excluding diversified mutual funds), or other financial benefit.
Commercial interest as defined by the ACCME is: any entity producing, marketing, re-selling, or distributing health care goods or services consumed by, or used on, patients.
When prompted in the abstract application process to disclose financial relationships, enter the information using the format in this example:

Abstracts and poster presentations must avoid commercialism and should conform to the ACCME Standards on Commercial Support and FDA Guidelines regarding promotion of FDA regulated products.
Abstracts that constitute promotion and advertising will not be accepted. If the project has been underwritten to any extent, a clear acknowledgement stating the nature of the support and identifying the source must be included.
Statements made in the abstract and presentation are the role responsibility of the author or presenter. Statements should not be viewed as or considered representative of any formal stance or position taken on any subject, issue, or product by the American Academy of Pain Medicine.

Poster abstract format top
The recommended abstract format includes: Introduction/Statement of the problem, Materials and methods, Results, and Conclusions. The text of the abstract may be up to 300 words.
A statement regarding the protocol used to recruit human subjects and obtain appropriate IRB approval should be included in the “Materials and methods” section.
In a separate field, you will also be prompted to enter up to 3 references. These will not be counted as part of the 300 words of the abstract text.
A separate prompt will require you to list any and all funding received for the project. If no funding was received, enter ‘None.’
Abstract selection criteria top
Each abstract submission will be reviewed for the following elements: (a) scientific quality, (b) broad appeal to the interests of the membership, and (c) timeliness of the topic. Abstracts will be reviewed in a blinded process by members of the AAPM Scientific Abstract Subcommittee.
